When I discover that hackers are attempting to hack the website using valid usernames, then it’s time to remove that username and create a new one. Here are the steps:
Step 1 – change the email address on the existing username
Log into the Dashboard and go to Users > All Users > Edit your username
If the email address on your existing username is the one you want to use on the new username, then you must change it on the existing username. It doesn’t matter what you change the email address to, as you’ll be deleting this user.
Step 2 – create a new user name
Dashboard > Users > Add New > type in your new username, your first and last name, your email and type in a secure password. I use this password generator – https://identitysafe.norton.com/password-generator/ – be sure to include at least 11 characters, upper and lower case, and punctuation. If you wish, check off the box to send the details to you in an email. Make sure you give yourself administrator rights.
Step 3 – log out and log back in as the new user
Once logged in as the new user, go to Users > All Users > mouse over the old user name and click delete. Be sure to attribute the posts to your new user. .
Step 4 – hide your new username
While still in Dashboard > All Users section, mouse over your new username and Edit. Scroll down to find the “Display name publicly as” dropdown menu. Select any of these you wish, except for your username. Make sure you click the blue button to update your profile.
You are done! Nice job!
